Fu-Tung Cheng is the founder of Cheng Design, a Berkeley, California design company that began with residential renovations and soon built a reputation for its innovative use of sculptural concrete. To meet the high demand for artisan concrete, Cheng established Cheng Concrete: a network for craftsmen that have learned Cheng's award-winning techniques through coursework. Cheng Concrete is also a concrete supply company; ensuring craftsmen have access to the same unique materials Cheng uses in his own designs.

A metamorphic rock that consists of talc, steatite, magnesite, quartz, and other magnesium rich minerals, soapstone can vary in degrees of hardness and texture. Unlike marble or granite, soapstone is non-porous and never needs sealing. Soapstone comes in two base colors: green gray and blue gray. With the optional application of mineral oil, the stone becomes a deeper shade of charcoal or black.
