Blown Fabric Light Installation by nendo

Blown-Fabric-Light-Fixture-Installation-by-nendo_001

Reminiscent of chochin paper lanterns, nendo created this blown fabric light installation for the Tokyo Fiber ’09 Senseware exhibition. Adopting the same technique that is used in glass blowing, these lights are blown from Smash - a long fiber non-woven polyester that is capable of being manipulated into different forms using a hot press form technology. Smash’s thermoplastic properties allow for the creation of seamless one-piece lanterns that are rip-proof and glow beautifully when illuminated from within.

As in glass blowing, the production of each piece can be interrupted at different intervals – creating completely unique ‘imperfect’ light objects that defy those found in standardized mass production.

LED bulbs in machined, aluminium sockets provide the light source and serve as an anchor to the hollow forms created by the hand blown Smash.

Industrial Iron Plumbing Pipe Lamps by DEMO / design clinic

Industrial-Iron-Plumbing-Pipe-Lamps-by-DEMO-design-clinic_001

Kozo lamps are the brainchild of DEMO / design clinic: a design co-op in Tel Aviv, Israel shared by seven designers. Kozo lamps are made out of galvanized iron plumbing pipes that are selected from different manufacturers around the globe; each bearing the trademarks of their origin. In keeping with the raw industrial aesthetic, the materials are left with a little rust at the joints and the markings left by hand tools used during the assembly process. Each lamp features an innovative on/off tap light switch that was developed in house.

Recycled Plastic Bottle Pendant Lighting by Heath Nash

Recycled-Plastic-Bottle-Pendant-Lighting-by-Heath-Nash_001

As a means of promoting the idea of recycling to the South African public, Heath Nash created the "Other People's Rubbish" pendant lighting collection. Utilizing galvanized steel wire and re-purposed post-consumer plastic waste products, each light fixture is an amalgamation of South African skill and modern design. In the creation of the flower light fixtures, colored plastic flowers are attached to handmade wire structures; while the bases of milk cartons and fabric softener bottle handles are used to create the more structured light fixtures.

Designer-Light-Bulb-Lamps-by-Pieke-Bergmans_001

Pieke Bergmans is a young product designer from the Netherlands who alters existing production processes to create new forms and functions. This "controlled imperfect production" technique transforms ordinary mass produced objects into objects that are once again personal. Her fabulous Light Blubs series stays true to this modus operandi by exploring the new forms that are created when light bulbs unexpectedly lose control of their original form. Each unique lamp is handcrafted crystal and equipped with LED lamping.

Vintage Lingerie Lighting by Tramp Lamps

Vintage-Lingerie-Lighting-by-Tramp-Lamps_001

Tramp Lamps is the creation of Kelly Kerrigan, an artist from Nashville, who repurposes vintage lingerie into luscious luminaries filled full of sensual curves. Much of her time is spent scouring second-hand shops looking for vintage corsets, bustiers, bras and pantaloons of a bygone era. From her studio, she transforms her second-hand finds into ladies of light by stiffening the garments and then attaching decorative ribbons, flowers and feathers. Each sultry lamp comes with a distinct name and personality all her own.
